In the GIS industry, it is vital to gain experience and build up your confidence with various softwares. However it has become increasingly difficult for students to gain experience when no one is interested in hiring graduates without hands-on experience. So what do you do?

I have a few tips I would like to share with GIS candidates, on how to get your foot in the door and acquire an entry level GIS job:

Create A Portfolio Of Your Work
During your GIS degree, I am sure you were required to complete a number of projects whether it be in mapping, digitising, etc. Be sure to keep a file of all these projects and create a portfolio of all your work. Potential employers will take this into consideration and be impressed by your organisational skills, so examples of your work will come in handy!

Keep An Eye Out For All Entry Level Positions Advertised
Entry level positions are not hard to come across. Always keep an eye out for these positions. Register yourself with all the major job boards including Seek and Career One, to receive notifications for any new positions that are advertised. Being proactive and alert will benefit you tremendously as it can result in employment!

Keep Up Too Date With Current GIS Trends
There are many GIS articles being written on the latest trends, and technologies. The GIS industry is one that is constantly changing and rapidly adopting so it is important to keep up to date with these changes. Register for newsletters, check GIS websites daily and broaden your knowledge on the industry!
