"Coaching" to hit targets!

A recent report by Profiles International states that performance reviews are of little benefit to staff or to the company! According to Profiles International, managers should accept that good performance is no "accident", and that performance reviews do not help reach company goals.

What's wrong with the current system?
  • Performance reviews can often lead to comparisons and ranking of staff members. This could lead to a hostile working environment.
  • Performance reviews are often rushed and inconsistent. This means that the employee does not have time to give their own feedback.
  • Performance reviews tend to focus on the negative side to the way things are done. They look at problems which have occurred; why they occurred and how they could have been prevented.
Profiles International say that focus should instead be placed on "coaching" to deliver "major results". This will allow staff members to provide valuable feedback about the role, and will encourage open communication and growth. Profiles International claim the coaching approach can result in 150% greater return on investment than performance reviews!

What can you do to "coach" your team?
  • Setting achievable goals.
  • Allowing employees the opportunity to self-assess and provide feedback.
  • Recognising the strengths of each employee rather than focusing on their fallbacks - remember that "one size does not fit all".
  • Consistent motivation and feedback .
  • Allowing the team to collectively achieve goals and partake in the success.
