How to Set Work Goals for the New Year

9 Jan 2020 | 3 min read

With the new decade just around the corner, many people would have already made new year resolutions regarding their health, life or family and friends. But what about work? Considering the number of hours people spend at work, it is important to be able to set goals for yourself to motivate you to work harder and achieve more. Here are some great ways to find your new year resolution.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

One way to figure out how to better yourself regarding work for the new year is to look at what your strengths and weaknesses are. More specifically, look at your strengths and weaknesses regarding your specific job. That way, you can clearly see where you need improvements and actively find methods to improve on it. For example, if you are in the digital marketing department and find that your company is using a new analytical technology such as CRM, and you have yet to completely understand the new technology, then taking up CRM courses may be a new year resolution.

Where do you want to be at the end of the year?

New year resolutions are about bettering yourself and achieving new heights, and this is easily applicable to your work life. Not everyone wants to stay in the same position for the rest of their work life, so being able to visualise yourself into the future is vital for building up motivation and progression. Do you want to be promoted? Get a raise? Get a job from a different company? If you have any desire to progress in some way, then that will be your new year resolution. And if you have not thought about where you want to be at the end of the following year, then now is a good time to think about it.

Do you want to try out something new?

Are you becoming increasingly tired of your current job, current position, or current company? Trying out something new can be a great way to learn new things about the workforce or even yourself. You may discover that you are good at a certain skill that you had not previously considered, or that you enjoy working for a different company because their ideals align well with yours. Setting a goal to try something new is a great way to discover something new about yourself, which may lead to a change in direction regarding your work that will benefit you in the long run.

Be realistic and go step by step

Not every goal is going to be achievable within one year, which is why it is important to be realistic about what you want to do and where you want to be by the end of the year. Instead of thinking too far ahead about your big dreams, you can start small by breaking down the steps to achieve this bigger goal and set to achieve a certain number of those steps per year. That way, you can still achieve your bigger goals, but also achieve them within a reasonable and realistic time period.
