Resignation: Is it time to leave your job?
Is it time to leave your job? Are you looking for a new start? Sometimes resigning from a position can feel harder than finding a new job. Alban D'Sa from Quay Appointments points out that leaving a job can even be just as hard as leaving a relationship!
One of the most important points is to overcome your fear. Often when candidates want to leave their position but are too afraid, they are tempted to stay in a job they have good reason to leave. Here are some tips on how to manage your resignation.
Reasons
Go over your reasons for leaving your current position. Make a pros and cons list of all the reasons why you should and should not continue working at that company. Making sure you have valid reasons for leaving your job can reassure you that you are making the right decision.
Role-play
Have you finally decided it's time to leave but don't know how to tell your employer? Think about the kind of reaction you are likely to receive. If possible, role-play with a friend how you think the situation will play out. Find a sensible and sensitive approach to telling your employer. If you have had problems in your workplace that have made you bitter and angry, your resignation is NOT the time to bring them up.
Resignation letter
Draft a resignation letter and get a friend, family member or recruitment consultant to read over it before presenting it to your employer. Keep it short and simple; thanking your employer for the opportunity and stating that you've enjoyed the time you have had working for the company. Use search engines to take a look at example resignation letters, but make sure you personalise the letter by tailoring it to your current position.
Counter offers
Counter offers are when a candidate advises their employer that they are leaving the company, and the employer offers the candidate some form of incentive to stay in the position. Research shows that most candidates who accept these incentives go forward to resign within 6 months, as their initial reasons for leaving have not changed.
